AW/23 An emotional connection Establishing and maintaining a first-class hospitality customer experience now increasingly sees shipping businesses deploying cutting-edge technologies, data analytics and behavioural psychology to create personalised and seamless interactions. Artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms can analyse vast amounts of data to identify patterns and preferences, uncover realtime points of failure, enable deep personalisation and much more. Whenever we think about appraising the customer experience it’s hard to climb out of the pigeon-hole focus on onboard and shoreside activities. A short stretch in scope might lead operators to also assess the booking and boarding processes, observe the crew’s demeanour and also consider the level of axial vibration. But there are other emotional details that passengers appreciate – even if they aren’t aware of it themselves. These may include anticipatory service, experiencing surprise and delight, accessibility and inclusivity, staff empowerment and a sense of connection. While sometimes hard to define and deliver, all can have a transformational impact. Passenger shipping continues to push boundaries and excel in this field, while remaining mindful that an easy smile from a crew member as they help customers on their journey is free, and still the most powerful tool to elevate the experience. In the keynote article of this Autumn/Winter 2023 issue of Cruise & Ferry Review, Barbara Muckermann of Silversea Cruises says: “I have dedicated my career to connecting people with the most enriching experiences around the world”. KEYNOTE Fascinated by the hieroglyphs, tombs and myths of Egypt, Silversea Cruises’ president Barbara Muckermann once envisaged a career as an archaeologist. “I travelled extensively with my father from a young age, which shaped my strong desire to experience our beautiful planet and engage with its diverse people and cultures,” she explains. “While my choice of profession changed, I never lost sight of the transformative power of travel and I have dedicated my career to connecting people with the most enriching experiences around the world.” Muckermann first joined the cruise sector in 1997 and has since held various positions of responsibility at different organisations in the marketing, travel and luxury sectors, including Italian fashion house Loro Piana, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises. In 2001, she took a role at Silversea, staying until 2006 when she returned to academia to complete an MBA at London Business School and Columbia University in New York, and subsequently taught strategy and worked in research. “While the experience was both challenging and rewarding, I was eager to return to the world of travel,” she says. In 2016, Muckermann returned to Silversea as chief marketing officer, became chief commercial officer in 2021 and in January 2023, she was appointed as the first woman president of Silversea. “I am thrilled to be at Silversea’s helm, leading such a talented and passionate team during what is an incredibly exciting time for the luxury cruise industry,” she says. “Working closely with colleagues at Royal Caribbean Group, we continue to strengthen our position as the leading ultra-luxury cruise line for the benefit of our guests.” More than 25 years in the luxury industries and time spent onboard cruise ships has taught Muckermann that listening to customers will be fundamental for driving Silversea’s ongoing success. “My experiences onboard have shown me that our guests’ changing needs Silversea Cruises is expanding its fleet with innovative ships, upgrading its onboard offerings and expanding its portfolio of destinations to deliver immersive travel experiences that will enrich guests’ lives. 13 Photo: Silversea Cruises Silversea has been able to visit new destinations in the polar regions since adding Silver Endeavour to its fleet KEYNOTE must drive the evolution of our brand,” says Muckermann. “Increasingly, we are appealing to Baby Boomers [those born between 1946 and 1964], who value experiences, authenticity and unique moments over material goods. This is the new currency of luxury.” This knowledge inspired the launch of Silversea’s S.A.L.T. culinary and Otium wellness programmes. “The former offers ‘deep travel’ through authentic destination immersion, while the latter is centred upon indulgence, moments of pleasure and complete relaxation, championing the luxuriousness of our offering,” says Muckermann. “We will always listen carefully to our guests to innovate and remain firmly at the forefront of the industry.” Feedback from Silversea’s guests also prompted the creation of Antarctica Bridge, the first fly-cruise programme in the ultra-luxury segment that enables guests to skip the Drake Passage when cruising in Antarctica. “Time-conscious travellers expressed their desire to experience the White Continent without spending two days each way crossing the Drake Passage, and our Antarctica Bridge programme has been hugely successful,” says Muckermann. “My first time flying in business-class comfort on a Silverseachartered plane to Antarctica was a oncein-a-lifetime experience. The landscape there is truly unique, and I’ll never forget seeing my first iceberg, catching a glimpse of a penguin colony, or being surrounded by snow-covered mountains at the end of the earth.” Participating in these experiences first-hand empowers Muckermann to find ways to refine and expand Silversea’s destination offerings, both in Antarctica and in other destinations across the world. “Immersive travel and luxurious comfort are at the heart of the Silversea product and enabling our guests to ‘travel deeper in luxury’ is our core mission, so we’re always looking for ways to refine and expand our offering,” says Muckermann. “It’s only by experiencing the product first-hand like a guest that you develop such a strong understanding of what it means to be immersed into a destination, while enjoying true luxury and comfort.” One of Silversea’s key priorities is to identify new ports of call around the world to help it continue developing increasingly varied itineraries. “Silversea is truly a destination leader; we call at over 900 destinations around the globe, which is more than any other cruise line,” says Muckermann. “We’re always looking for new destinations, itineraries and experiences to offer our well-travelled guests. Kitchen, where guests can try making dishes inspired by the destinations or regions of the world they are visiting factors that sets us apart from others in the industry.” During a scouting mission to Antarctica, Silversea identified 42 potential new sites it can use for landings. “This means our guests can explore new places in the region,” says Muckermann. “We’ve also set about exploring the lesser-known Canadian Arctic, providing our guests with unique experiences that they cannot get elsewhere. “However, the reality is that there’s so much more of the world left to explore. We recently developed new programmes in the Indian Ocean, the South Pacific and the Arabian Peninsula. We’ve also worked with the South African government to open new destinations and have been granted access to smaller ports. This means that in 2024, we’ll become the first cruise player to offer a true expedition along the unspoiled South African coast.” Silversea’s efforts to expand its itineraries is largely being facilitated by what Muckermann terms as its “aggressive” shipbuilding strategy, which has seen it debut five new vessels in three years. In 2022, the brand expanded its fleet of classic ocean cruise vessels from four to six with the addition of sisters Silver Moon and Silver Dawn and also introduced both Silver Origin and Silver Endeavour to its ultra-luxury expedition fleet, which now comprises five ships. Silver Endeavour was acquired from Crystal Cruises and extensively renovated before entering service, while the 100-guest Silver Origin was the first of Silversea’s ships to be purpose-built for a specific destination. “As part of our shipbuilding strategy, we aim to introduce new vessels that are perfectly tailored for their purpose,” says Muckermann. “Silver Origin, for example, is designed for sailing in the Galápagos Islands and was christened there in an expedition-style naming ceremony while we admired it from Zodiacs in the archipelago.” Meanwhile Silver Endeavour is designed for the polar regions. “With the acquisition of Silver Endeavour, the KEYNOTE “ Immersive travel and luxurious comfort are at the heart of the Silversea product and enabling our guests to ‘travel deeper in luxury’ is our core mission”

17 The Marquee is one of several new outward-facing venues onboard Silver Nova most luxurious expedition ship at sea, we gained an outpost of discovery that can push the boundaries of exploration even further,” says Muckermann. “In August 2023, we became the first expedition cruise line to operate a number of voyages from the small hamlet of Pond Inlet, located on the northern end of Baffin Island in Canada. These programmes are planned again for 2024, and we continue to look for exciting new itineraries that showcase Silver Endeavour’s incredible expedition capabilities.” In August 2023, Silversea welcomed its first Nova-class vessel, Silver Nova, which began service with a sevenday maiden voyage in the Adriatic. Designed for ocean cruising, the ship is the first in the fleet to feature a horizontal layout and asymmetrical design, as well as some of the most spacious suites at sea and multiple highend public venues. In addition, it has an industry-first micro auto gasification system to convert onboard waste into thermal energy, batteries and dual-fuel engines running primarily on LNG. “Watching our fleet’s 12th ship, Silver Nova, come to life and finally set sail is an experience I’ll never forget,” says Muckermann. “Our incredible new ship is unlike anything else in the industry and sets the benchmark for the future of ultraluxury cruise travel. The ship was years in the making, so it was very emotional to finally welcome guests onboard.” Silver Nova has received “such amazing feedback” from trade partners, members of the press and guests, according to Muckermann. “We had particularly strong feedback on the asymmetrical design, which brings the destination into view from virtually all public venues and suites,” she says. “At 75gt per guest, Silver Nova is one of the most spacious ships at sea, and the 4,000 square metres of glass connects guests with the destination like never before. “Other notable new features include the S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table, which showcases the talents of our chefs to just a handful of guests each evening; outward-facing venues, such as The Marquee and the Dusk Bar; and the Cliff Whirlpool, which overlooks the destination on one side. The ship also introduces the latest iterations of our S.A.L.T. culinary and Otium wellness programmes, with enhanced venues and enriched offerings. 19 The new Silver Nova is the first Silversea ship to feature a horizontal and asymmetrical layout, offering guests a panoramic view of destinations while sailing or in port more than any other throughout the course of the architectural preview was ‘game changing’ and this is how best to describe it.” Silver Nova will spend its inaugural season sailing the Mediterranean before operating voyages in the Americas, Alaska, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. It will be joined by sister ship Silver Ray in 2024. In addition to debuting new ships and exploring additional destinations, Muckermann and her team will continue to invest in other initiatives to further enhance the guest experience in 2023 and beyond. “The next five years will see us strengthen our position as the leader in the ultra-luxury cruising space,” she says. “By 2027, we project that one in three ultra-luxury cruisers will choose Silversea. We’ll achieve this with our shipbuilding approach and by leveraging our destination expertise to offer guests the most desirable itineraries and unparalleled experiences, attracting the next generation of experience-focused travellers.” Muckermann predicts the increasing interest in experiential travel will lead to further growth for the luxury cruise sector. “Travellers are hungry for once-ina-lifetime trips and experiences that money just can’t buy,” she explains. “All the major players are reporting figures above 2019 numbers, which shows the pent-up demand in every market for luxury cruising. There are also new players entering the industry, which is another encouraging sign of burgeoning demand. 20 MARKETWATCH Explora Journeys begins sailing first cruises Explora Journeys’ Explora I set sail on its maiden voyage from Copenhagen in Denmark on 1 August, as the new cruise line began operating fully for the first time. “We offer our guests a new style of transformative ocean travel,” said Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys. “Explora Journeys aims to create unique and emotional connections that are powerful, transformative and universal, which we call the ‘ocean state of mind’. Everything we do is rooted in that philosophy.” Explora 1 has 461 suites, all of which include ocean-facing balconies. These range from the 35-square-metre Ocean Terrace Suites to the 280-square-metre Owner’s Residence. “Welcome to our home, a dream that we’ve been working on for over three years,” said Jason Gelineau, head of product at Explora Journeys, during a shakedown cruise. “Our suites have an incredible sense of space, with light colours and floor-toceiling windows. It’s not just a room to sleep in, it’s a room to live in.” Bespoke music related to the ship’s destination will play in different areas onboard, created by music directors Music Concierge. These include the ship’s six restaurants and 12 bars and lounges. These include the pan-Asian dining venue Sakura, European steakhouse Marble & Co. Grill, the French-inspired Fil Rouge and Med Yacht Club, which offers a menu of Mediterranean dishes. In addition, the Anthology restaurant will rotate menus curated by a range of acclaimed chefs, beginning with Mauro Ulliasi. “We’re all more educated in food and beverages today, and we wanted to make sure that we provided our guests with choice,” said Gelineau. “Each restaurant has its own personality, with none being inferior to the rest. Our culinary team is truly top class, and we work alongside incredible chefs who are still passionate about cooking.” The ship will spend the autumn in North America, the winter in the Caribbean and spring on the West Coast of America and in Hawaii. It will then return to Europe in Summer 2024. Itineraries will range from seven to 11 nights in length, with guests able to combine multiple voyages in a single stay. Global Ports Holding, the world’s largest cruise port operator, handled a record number of cruise passengers between 31 March 2022 and 31 March 2023, the 9.2 million passengers welcomed at its 27 cruise ports in 14 countries was a 281 per cent increase on the same period in 2022, when just 2.4 million passengers passed through the company’s ports. In the three months to June 2023, the UKbased company welcomed 3.1 million passengers, up from 1.7 million in the same period in 2022. “The outlook for the global cruise industry has perhaps never been stronger,” said Mehmet Kutman, chairman and CEO of Global Ports Holding. “The global cruise fleet is now fully redeployed, occupancy rates are generally back to 100 per cent, and many cruise lines have broken booking records for the 2023 season.” Global Ports Holding records 281 per cent rise in cruise numbers British ports are projected to welcome eight per cent more cruise calls in 2023, compared to 2019’s recordbreaking season, with some regions expected to report figures in excess of this anticipated national growth. Cruise ship calls along the east coast of Scotland have increased by 50 per cent from 2019, with around 150 cruise ships expected to visit Edinburgh, Fife and Dundee in 2023, up from 100 in 2022. “Britain’s distinct national and regional identities help make our islands an outstanding cruise destination and provide a wealth of diverse itineraries within short sailing distances,” said Ian McQuade, general manager of Portland Port, who has been appointed as chair of Cruise Britain until 31 December 2024. The port has welcomed over 20,000 cruise guests and crew members to visit Port of HaminaKotka to experience the Kotka-Hamina region this summer. The average occupancy rate of the cruise ships visiting this season has been over 80 per cent. The cities Hamina and Kotka, as well as local entrepreneurs, have, in close collaboration with the Port of HaminaKotka, coordinated a wide range of services to cater to international guests. Photo: Port of HaminaKotka Port of Keelung expects passenger rebound amid continuous investment The Port of Keelung in Taiwan is expecting cruise passenger numbers to recover to 30 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in 2023, and to 80 per cent in 2024, as the regional cruise industry continues to recover after Covid-19. The port, which is operated by Taiwan International Ports Corporation, has continued to invest in the renewal and expansion of its cruise terminals during the pandemic, as well as launching initiatives to promote Asian ports in Europe, the United States and Japan. As a result, Keelung received its first post-pandemic calls in March 2023, while its efforts were recognised by the Asia Cruise Leaders Network with the presentation of a Special Achievement award at the annual Jeju Cruise Forum held in Korea. Guernsey in the Channel Islands is anticipating 95 cruise calls this season, up from 84 in 2022, with 12 cruise ships making their maiden visits in the 2023 season. The Port of Gibraltar is expecting around 180 cruise ships and between 300,000 and 325,000 passengers this year. Spain’s Port of Bilbao is scheduled to receive 80 cruise ships over the course of the 2023 season, a slight increase from its record-breaking 2022 season when 78 cruise ships called at the port. In June 2022, the port handled 5,000 passengers in a single day. Israel’s Port of Ashdod is set to welcome 123 cruise ships in 2023, a significant increase from the 62 vessels it received during the 2022 cruise season. Stornoway Port in the Outer Hebrides is expecting visits from almost 100 cruise ships by the end of September. It recorded its busiest week to date, when seven vessels called between 30 June and 6 July 2023. 25 Canada’s Port of Thunder Bay in Ontario is to host 14 cruise calls in the 2023 season, up from nine in 2022. The port community is scheduled to welcome 24 vessel visits from five different ships in 2024.

The Port of Thessaloniki in Greece is to become the homeport for Crystal Symphony from 2025. Crystal is the first global cruise line to use the Mediterranean port for full turnarounds. “We are excited to host Crystal Symphony at the Port of Thessaloniki,” said Theodora Riga, chief commercial officer and director of strategic communications. “This significant development opens a new chapter for us, further enhancing its position in the international cruise sector.” Crystal has also added Thessaloniki to its 2024 calling destinations. 27 Luxury cruise brand Crystal is to launch four new ships before 2029. It is working with advisors, lenders and export credit agents to finalise an agreement with two European shipbuilders for two classic ships and two expedition vessels. “We have ambitious growth plans for Crystal and are proud of what we have accomplished in just under a year,” said Cristina Levis, CEO of A&K Travel Group. “We are now thrilled to announce we will be growing our fleet.” The brand, which was saved from liquidation by A&K Travel Group in June 2022, already operates two ocean cruise ships, both of which have been extensively refurbished at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Trieste, Italy (read more on page 117). Stena Vision now operates the route alongside Stena Horizon, providing departures twice a day, six days a week. Guests onboard Stena Vision’s inaugural voyage were welcomed with a complimentary glass of prosecco, and there were special gifts for the first freight and leisure guests. Seabourn’s second purpose-built expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit, welcomed its first guests onboard on 12 August before embarking on its eightday maiden voyage from Valletta, Malta, to Rome, Italy. The ship was delivered by Italian shipyard T. Mariotti at the end of July 2023. Seabourn Pursuit has been purposebuilt to operate in remote, diverse environments and complies with PC6 Polar Class standards. Itineraries will be led by a 24-person expedition team of scientists, scholars, naturalists and more. The vessel will sail five cruises in the Mediterranean before embarking on two voyages across the Atlantic and through the Caribbean. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Barbados to begin its expedition journeys on 10 October. 31 Carnival Cruise Line expands use of facial biometric technology Carnival Cruise Line has partnered with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to expand its use of facial biometric technology to expedite the disembarkation process. Nine of Carnival’s 14 homeports in the USA are using the technology in summer 2023, including PortMiami, Port Canaveral, Tampa, Jacksonville, New York, Baltimore, Mobile, Galveston and Long Beach. The technology has shortened the disembarkation process by an average of 30 per cent for the more than three million Carnival passengers who have used it so far. Guests leaving the ships at the end of a cruise take a photo at a kiosk and within seconds, the image is biometrically compared to their passport or visa photo to verify their identity with over 98 per cent accuracy. US travellers and select foreign nationals can request a manual document check from a CBP officer if they prefer to opt out of the process. The company will supply custom lights for cabins and corridors, as well as portal lights. “There are not many marine lighting solutions which are suitable for B0 or B15 required areas,” said Aldona Mäkinen, CEO. “But we’ve created a custom solution for this project, of which we’re extremely proud.” Like the company’s other handmade lighting solutions, the products will be made from high-quality, durable materials, ensuring product longevity in order to limit the impact on the environment. “We think carefully about the impact to the environment during the design process and when choosing components,” said Mäkinen. “By using sustainable components and materials that can be reused, we minimise waste and help the environment. Built at a cost of $656 million, Vista is 67,000gt, 791 feet (241 metres) long, and can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew. “The ship represents a growing number of new and innovative passenger vessels whose companies have chosen to flag with the RMI thanks to the registry’s comprehensive support and coordination from design to delivery,” said a spokesperson for the registry. Vista is currently sailing a sold-out inaugural summer season in the Mediterranean. In September 2023 it will sail to Canada and New England, USA, before repositioning to PortMiami for winter 2023-2024. RMI Registry welcomes Oceania Cruises’ Oceania Vista GerrisBoats develops new energy-efficient hull platform Italian start-up GerrisBoats has created and patented a modular hull platform that can help passenger ferries, water taxis and yachts reduce fuel consumption and the noise and waves they generate while operating. According to creators Massimo Verme and Roberto Rossi, GerrisBoats’ hull platform “proposes a paradigm shift in nautical design and construction” and will enable vessels to operate more sustainably, while also increasing passenger comfort. This would make it suitable for building passenger ferries delivering public transport services, or smaller water taxis that would offer point-to-point transport via an Uber-like system. GerrisBoats worked with Italian shipyard Azimut Benetti, the University of Genoa and other partners during the research and development phase. It also presented the sustainability, technical and accessibility benefits of the solution to the Ligurian and Navigazione Laghi Administrations and others during a roundtable on smart water mobility near Genoa, Italy, in July 2023. SUSTAINABILITY MILESTONES Three major cruise operators significantly reduced their impact on the environment, according to their latest sustainability reports. Carnival Corporation cut both single-use plastic items and absolute particulate matter air emissions (relative to a 2015 baseline) in 2021, according to its 2022 Sustainability Report. It also hopes to achieve a 20 per cent carbon intensity reduction (relative to its 2019 baseline measurement) by 2030. According to MSC Cruises’ latest sustainability report, it has decreased the carbon intensity of its ship operations by 33.5 per cent since 2008. This puts it on track to reach a 40 per cent reduction ahead of its 2030 target. In 2022, Royal Caribbean International reduced the solid waste offloaded to landfill by 90 per cent from its 2007 baseline. The organisation is set to cut 100 per cent of its onboard single-use plastics and reduce carbon intensity by double digits (from 2019 baseline) by 2025.
