Royal Caribbean International’s successor to Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas hosted a variety of UK visitors, from travel agents to media, during a short visit in April 2016 before setting sail for its homeport of Tianjin, China.

Finishing touches, such as the addition of a giant panda mother-and-cub sculpture (in keeping with the giraffe and polar bear ‘mascots’ on the upper decks of the first two ships) were still being done on the 346m, 167,80gt ship, which was in England following delivery by Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

Royal Caribbean International president and CEO Michael Bayley and UK and Ireland managing director Stuart Leven were among the Royal Caribbean executives present for the UK event. It was also announced that Chinese actress, Fan Bingbing, will be the godmother for the ship. She will christen Ovation of the Seas on the ship’s return to China.

A variety of changes have been made to the Quantum features to equip the new ship for the Chinese market. These include the addition of 1,000sqft of retail space for beauty products, as well as new Swarovski, Kate Spade and Michael Kors boutiques and the upscale Regalia watch outlet.

Royal Caribbean is also introducing its new ‘Genie’ service onboard Ovation of the Seas. The Genies will perform a highly specialised butler service for the occupants of its most exclusive suite accommodation.

At a media briefing, Bayley said that in addition to great anticipation from the Chinese market, Ovation of the Seas had seen strong interest from Australia. “There has been lots of excitement in the Australian market, where people want to have some fun with us.” Certain features of the ship will be adapted for a short Australia season. This will include the introduction of a spin cycling facility for fitness-focused guests.

He said that Ovation, as the third ship in the series, had the opportunity to refine small architectural items onboard. “Vintages Wine Bar is all opened up and has design improvements. We’ve extended the Cartier store and introduced a bigger ‘Next cruise’ sales corner.”
