Resin applications specialist Bolidt has renewed more than 30 indoor and outdoor spaces onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas during its recent $100 million refurbishment.
A team of 150 Bolidt technicians carried out installations on decks five to 17 onboard Allure of the Seas, covering an area of around 18,000 square metres. Bolidt’s lightweight and hardwearing Bolideck Future Teak was used on the 4,000-square-metre pool deck to resurface existing installations. A new children’s pool area was also fitted with Bolideck Select in various designs.
Bolideck Future Teak and Select Soft was installed on the 1,950-metre jogging track - which has been re-sanded and repaired - as well as on 115 balconies spanning 1,900 square metres. The products were also used on soundproofing for a new 800-square-metre extension to the solarium on deck 15.
The Bolidt team also removed five millimetres from the top layer of the ship’s 1,800—square-metre sun deck to save weight. Bolideck Select was then installed on the sun deck.
“While a typical refit takes two or three weeks to complete, this project was of such a scale that its duration amounted to 43 days in drydock, and a further seven days at sea,” said Gerben Smit, head of operations, global maritime division at Bolidt. “Yet thanks to close collaboration and a little over seven months of preparation, we brought the project to a successful conclusion.”
Royal Caribbean International’s 5,496-guest Allure of the Seas is one of nine ships refurbished by Bolidt for the cruise line since mid-2024. Bolidt has also secured refurbishment projects for five Carnival Cruise Line ships and six Norwegian Cruise Line vessels.
Onboard Carnival Sunshine, a Bolidt team removed the teak from all the balconies to install an entirely new system, topped with Bolideck Future Teak. The project began while the ship was sailing between Charleston in South Carolina, USA, and Marseille, France, and was completed in drydock.
In recent months, Bolidt has also completed projects onboard Marella Cruises’ Explorer and Discovery 2, as well as ships operated by AIDA Cruises, Celebrity Cruise Line, Holland America Line and MSC Cruises.
“Bolidt solutions are now ubiquitous in the cruise industry, with Bolideck Future Teak an especially popular choice thanks to its weight and durability,” said Smit. “Operators also appreciate our capacity to manage entire projects as a one-stop shop offering production, logistics, and application services under one roof.”
