Interferry and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have held the Africa Ferry Safety Seminar in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together over 100 participants from the African ferry community.

The two-day event was intended to improve cooperation and safety standards across Africa's ferry industry. A delegation of 15 representatives of Interferry members joined the event to exchange experiences and share best practices on both operational and regulatory levels.

Discussions focused on critical areas impacting safety. These included ticketing and passenger counting; cargo loading and stowage; vessel design and classification, insurance and financing; management culture and technical management; incident reporting; and the crucial role of political will in driving safety improvements.

“This event represents a vital step forward in prioritising ferry safety across Africa,” said Mike Corrigan, CEO of Interferry. “The collaborative spirit and commitment from all attendees were truly inspiring. Together, we can address existing challenges and build a safer future for African ferry operations.”

A dedicated follow-up session is planned for the Interferry 2024 conference in Marrakech, Morocco, on 30 October
