Female captain for Silversea

Silversea Cruises has appointed its first female captain after nearly 20 years in the industry.

Swiss national Margrith Ettlin became captain of the 132-guest expedition ship Silver Explorer on 7 August in Reykjavik and will remain in the position until October.

“We’re very pleased and proud to extend this promotion to Captain Ettlin,” said Christian Sauleau, Silversea’s executive vice president of fleet operations. “Although we’re not the first cruise company to have a female captain, we hope Captain Ettlin’s achievement will inspire other women to pursue careers at sea.”

Ettlin has extensive maritime experience sailing in remote regions such as the Arctic and Antarctica. Prior to joining Silversea as a staff captain in March 2010, she worked for Germany’s F Laeisz shipping group and spent around nine years as a staff captain with the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd.
