The Port of Tampa set a record for single day passenger throughput on Sunday (20 November) with an estimated 12,623 people going through its doors.

The figures, which are the highlight of what is already becoming a successful winter season, were the result of three ships being in port: Holland America’s Ryndam, Carnival Corporations’ Carnival Legend and Norwegian Cruise Lines’ (NCL) Norwegian Star.

The port, which predicts that it will be hitting around 940,000 passengers this year, is hoping that continued growth will see it reach the one million mark in future campaigns.

Tampa has had much to celebrate of late, with NCL choosing to homeport Norwegian Star from October, while Carnival and Royal Caribbean both use the port extensively.

“This is an exciting time for us at the port as we see a flourishing cruise business, owing to the positive guest experience offered, as well as a continued rise in popularity of Tampa as a home port of the cruise lines,” said Richard Wainio, Tampa’s port director and chief executive.
