China-based shipyard Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry is to build a new passenger ship for Viking Line’s Turku (Finland) – Åland Islands – Stockholm (Sweden) route.

Both Viking Line’s and Xiamen Shipbuilding’s boards of directors need to approve the contract, which also includes an option for another vessel.

To be delivered in 2020, the 63,000gt newbuild will measure 218 metres in length and have 1,500-metre-long cargo lanes. The vessel will be able to accommodate 2,800 passengers and will operate using energy-efficient systems and technologies. Viking Line plans to hire Scandinavian architects for the interior design and collaborate with several Finnish and other European suppliers.
