Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is to use new 3D model-based software from NAPA to improve how it designs passengers ships and other vessels.

NAPA Steel enables users to create a single flexible 3D model for the whole vessel, which can be used throughout the design process. This means HHI will be able to use it to create plan approval drawings, generate finite element models, calculate weights, and more.

“NAPA Steel will be a paradigm shift in increasing competitive advantage and productivity and creating cost savings for all our customers,” said Juha Heikinheimo, president of NAPA Group. “NAPA Steel has revolutionised our software and delivered an agile, fast-to-learn and user friendly design tool that meets the needs of new ‘digital natives’ entering the industry.”

HHI actively participated in testing and developing NAPA Steel and expects to reduce design time and man hours by almost 30% when it is fully implemented. Further reductions are expected in future.

“We have been testing this new software over a long period of time and are sure that the roll out of NAPA Steel will allow our engineers to become more productive, greatly enhancing the quality of ship structural design,” said Hong-Ryeul Ryu, head of HHI’s Basic Hull Design Department.
