Swedish transport company Västtrafik is to test an electric hydrofoil ferry for two weeks between Stenpiren in central Gothenburg and Öckerö ferry terminal.
The pilot project will see the Candela P-12, developed by ferry manufacturer Candela, tested between 9-19 September. The ferry will sail six departures a day, with a short charging stop after each trip.
The project is being carried out in partnership with Candela, Swedish ferry company Styrsöbolaget and Öckerö Municipality.
“With this initiative, we want to explore whether hydrofoil technology can make our boat traffic even faster and more energy-efficient,” said Bijan Zainali, Chairman of the Board of Västtrafik. “We have been commissioned by the regional council to work on the future of sustainable travel at sea. This test will be the starting point for the work.”
Öckerö Municipality will recruit travellers able to commute to and from Öckerö ferry terminal and central Gothenburg by ferry for the testing. Their experience of the ferry will be assessed, along with the timetables, docking, loading and staffing.
The Candela P-12’s hydrofoil technology means that the ferry rises on wings under the hull and lifts around 1.5 metres above the water’s surface. The vessel is fully electric and has a cruising speed of 25 knots. According to Candela, the ferry consumes 80 per cent less energy compared to a diesel-powered vessel of the same size.
“For us as ship manufacturers, this provides valuable insights while we hope to offer commuters a unique experience and a taste of what hydrofoil technology can mean – faster and more comfortable electric travel at sea,” says Tord Ringenhall, project manager at Candela.
