Meyer Turku delivered TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 5 on 20 June, ten days ahead of schedule.

Jan Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku, officially handed the ship over to TUI Cruises’ CEO Wybcke Meier and CFO Frank Kuhlmann during a ceremony at the yard in Turku, Finland.

Mein Schiff 5 and her crew members will depart the yard on 21 June, sailing to Kiel, Germany, where they will dock on 23 June.

“Although this is already our third newbuild, it’s still incredibly exciting to see a new ship grow from the first steel cutting to the finishing interior touches,” said Meier. “In a good two-year construction period, countless people have dedicated themselves to turning ten million components into our ship. We are looking forward to finally putting Mein Schiff 5 into service in mid-July.”

Construction of the 99,800gt vessel started at Meyer Turku’s yard in Turku, Finland on 18 November 2014, while the keel-laying ceremony was held in June 2015.

Designed as a sister ship to Mein Schiff 3 and Mein Schiff 4, the 295m Mein Schiff 5 features 15 decks and is able to accommodate 1,026 crew and 2,794 passengers in 1,267 cabins. Around 90% of the cabins will be outside, while 82% will feature balconies.

The ship also offers 13 dining venues, including Japanese restaurant Hanami – by two-star Michelin chef Tim Raue, and Schmankerl – Entspannt genießen, which serves Austrian cuisine. Other onboard highlights include 13 bars and lounges, outdoor pools, entertainment venues and more.

Mein Schiff 5 was constructed using the latest environmentally friendly technologies to ensure it consumes around 30% less energy than similar-sized cruise ships. The vessel will also be fitted with a combined exhaust cleaning systems, which include a scrubber and catalytic converter, to reduce sulphur emissions by around 99% and nitrogen oxide emissions by around 75%. Energy consumption is a further 4% lower than on the sister ship Mein Schiff 3.

“We had the unique opportunity to build on the high standard and success of Mein Schiff 3 and Mein Schiff 4 to further perfect this series of ships with Mein Schiff 5,” said Meyer. “We are immensely proud of the result. This is in no small measure due to the trust and excellent cooperation with TUI Cruises.”
