TUI Cruises is to use a digital behaviour change service from sustainability startup Signol to help cut carbon emissions and tackle decarbonisation onboard its eight Mein Schiff cruise ships.
The pilot programme, which will initially run for six months, will combine advanced data analysis with behavioural science to help crew members save fuel while performing daily operational duties.
Signol has worked closely with TUI Cruises to identify four operational processes where captains and chief engineers have the most potential to reduce fuel consumption, such as ensuring timely departures to minimise engine running time. These opportunities to save fuel, known as Signol’s behaviours, have been defined and calculated using detailed insights specifically from cruise operations. When combined with Signol’s existing analysis of fuel-saving opportunities in other shipping contexts, these insights will enable the company to provide a tailored service for the cruise industry.
“As a human-centric decarbonisation solution, Signol is always looking to ensure crew members are engaged and prioritised in fuel efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives,” said Harriet Hunnisett Johnson, head of maritime at Signol. “By working closely with TUI Cruises’ captains, we’ve developed a sophisticated approach to fuel saving onboard cruise ships which is tailored to their experiences and tasks each day.”
TUI Cruises’ crew members will be encouraged to change their behaviours to save fuel through a set of techniques, which will be delivered directly via Signol’s web app and email communications. For every fuel-saving milestone achieved, TUI Cruises will make a donation to the United Nations-awarded Greek social enterprise Enaleia, which collaborates with more than 6,000 fishers to conduct daily collections of marine plastic. This waste is then recycled and also converted into new products, such as kayaks.
“Reducing carbon emissions is one of TUI Cruises' main priorities in relation to our Sustainability Strategy 2030,” said Lucienne Damm, head of sustainability at TUI Cruises. “As a young cruise line company, we’ve always ensured our vessels use the latest and most efficient environmental technologies, but we know the crew also play a vital role in ensuring we minimise the environmental impact of our voyages. Signol enables us to address fuel efficiency at an even deeper level, by actively engaging crew members on how they can make the most of their opportunities to save fuel and reduce emissions.”
