The Port of Southampton has celebrated the inaugural call of Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess, one of 11 vessels to be making their maiden visit to the UK city this season.

Port director Alistair Welch and the port’s general manager Craig Barbour welcomed Sun Princess to Southampton, boarding the vessel for a traditional plaque and key ceremony with her captain.

“We are delighted to welcome the Sun Princess on her maiden call to Europe’s leading cruise turnaround port,” said Welch. “She is one of 11 cruise ships making their maiden call to the port this year which is great for the port and the city.”

Southampton typically welcomes around two million cruise passengers each year. Each ship visit generates around £2 million (US$2.5 million) for the local economy.
