The Government of Bermuda has confirmed the first of its two new 40-metre low-emission catamaran ferries being built by Singapore-based shipbuilder Strategic Marine is technically sound and compliant. The ferry, which has been designed by One2Three Naval Architects, can now progress toward final delivery and deployment.

Once operational, the two new 550-passenger ferries will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 25 per cent compared to existing ferries on a passenger mile basis. It will also offer significant savings on operational costs.

“This technical acceptance milestone reflects the strong collaboration between Strategic Marine, the Government of Bermuda, and our supply partners,” said Chan Eng Yew, CEO of Strategic Marine. “We are proud to uphold our commitment to delivering world-class ferries that exceed the highest standards of safety, quality and performance while lowering environmental impact.”

The first ferry is expected to be delivered before the end of 2025, with Rudolph Cann, director of the department of marine and ports services for the Government of Bermuda, saying: “This marks a major step toward enhancing our fleet with modern ferries that will serve both our residents and visitors for many years to come.”
