French design firm Stirling Design International (SDI) and Piriou Shipyard have designed a new coastal ferry for the French Atlantic coast, which will operate a service to Yue Island for regional authority Region des Pays de Loire.

The shipyard and SDI partnered to design the ship from the beginning of the competitive tender process in 2019. The design of the ship has been inspired by passenger cargo vessels operated in the early 20th century, emphasising the aerial view from the upper bridge. The new vessel will replace Insula Oya II, which has been in service for 40 years.

The newbuild will increase passenger capacity and will feature two lounges designed with traditional wood interiors. Noise and greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced, with shore power connection systems installed onboard and in port.

Construction of the new ship will begin later this year, with delivery scheduled for 2022.
