MTN’s StarEdge is a hybrid onboard connectivity solution that combines multiple networks to achieve a 99.995 per cent uptime to provide an instant and reliable connection, even in the middle of the ocean.

StarEdge leverages Low Earth Orbit satellites, like Starlink and OneWeb, alongside traditional geostationary satellites, for global coverage without the need for local ground stations. It also integrates 5G, 4G and long-term evolution coverage via over 690 telecommunications operators in 210 countries, as well as a near-shore radio frequency non-satellite network from over 100 ports. This near-shore service provides a fast, cost-effective, high-speed, low-latency connection, capable of up to 400 megabits per second from the network and up to one gigabit per second for port connectivity. This multi-network approach ensures performance optimisation for passengers, crew and corporate needs.

The system also leverages fusion bonding, utilising multiple Starlink antennas simultaneously with the Pepwave mobile router to maximise output and enhance Starlink’s full capabilities. For business-critical applications, StarEdge provides routable static IP addresses to ensure connections are secure and consistent from any location, at any time. MTN also offers single billing for cruise and ferry operators, giving clients one invoice covering all their sites, which significantly reduces administrative costs and effort.

MTN, which is a subsidiary of FMC GlobalSat, supports the passenger experience with MTN iCafe, a customisable, flexible and adaptive connectivity portal designed to maximise profitability and deliver a seamless experience for passengers and crew. The iCafe portal offers internet access through an intuitive design with a quick two-click purchase experience – users do not need to create accounts or log in. It also provides a variety of uniquely customised plans, including some defined by stateroom category or for groups/charters. Cruise lines can also create a crew-specific platform.

Every MTN solution is backed by dedicated support from the network operations centre which provides 24/7 multilingual assistance year-round. This back-end system ensures MTN is a trusted partner in global maritime connectivity.
