Princess Cruises’ second Sphere-class ship, Star Princess, has been christened by godparents Camila and Matthew McConaughey, co-founders of Pantalones Organic Tequila.

The naming ceremony, which took place on 6 November at Port Everglades in Florida, included a maritime tradition that dates back centuries – the breaking of a celebratory bottle against the ship’s hull. However, there was a twist, as a bottle of the McConaughey’s Pantalones Organic Tequila was used to wish the ship, guests and crew good fortune.

“It’s an honour to follow in the footsteps of past godparents and welcome Star Princess into the Princess fleet,” said Camila and Matthew McConaughey. “We are excited to share this moment with the guests who step aboard – coming together with family and friends, making new memories, and sharing a Pantalones cocktail, or two.”

The event in the ship’s Princess Arena was hosted by travel and lifestyle TV personality Dawn McCoy and also featured live entertainment, including a performance by Grammy-award winning singer Sheryl Crow, as well as a drone show which paid tribute to Star Princess’ upcoming itinerary to Alaska.

“Today’s naming ceremony is a milestone filled with pride and joy for everyone at Princess Cruises,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Princess Cruises. “Star Princess is a stunning reflection of our legacy and our future – bringing together incredible design, exceptional experiences, and the spirit of discovery our guests love. We’re grateful to Matthew and Camila McConaughey for joining the Princess family and know their warmth and infectious spirit will always be felt throughout Star Princess.”

Sun Princess began sailing its inaugural season, which includes voyages to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Panama Canal and Alaska, in October 2025.
