Isles of Scilly Steamship Group’s new passenger ferry Scillonian IV will undergo sea trials this week in Vietnam.

The vessel will make its way down the Nhà Bè river from the Piriou Vietnam shipyard in Ho Chi Minh City where it was constructed to the South China Sea in preparation for sea trials off the coast of Vung Tua.

Isles of Scilly Steamship Group's technical superintendent Luke Parnell, engineer Jonathan Jackman and Scillonian master Joe Whetton will join representatives from the shipyard and classification society Lloyd's Register during the speed and operational trials. The team will also test key pieces of onboard machinery, including anchors and safety boats, to ensure they meet international safety standards.

The ferry operator will also start the familiarisation process for Scillonian IV.

The purpose-built ferry can carry up to 600 people – marking a 24 per cent increase on the group’s current vessel – and will include roll and pitch reduction systems to enhance passenger comfort. It also has modern propulsion technology to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

“The commencement of sea trials represents an important step towards bringing Scillonian IV into service next year,” said Stuart Reid, chief executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group. “We’re delighted to see the project reaching this crucial phase and look forward to sharing further updates as Scillonian IV continues its journey towards serving the Isles of Scilly.”

After completing its sea trials, Scillonian IV will receive a final fit-out and certification before its delivery voyage to the UK, where it will enter service in 2027.

Scillonian IV is part of Isles of Scilly Steamship Group’s £40 million ($54.1 million) vessel replacement programme. Other new vessels include freight ship Menawethan, which entered service this week.
