The Royal Institution of Naval Architects, in association with International Cruise & Ferry Review, is to hold a conference in November 2013 to discuss the latest challenges in both the design and the operation of passenger ships.

Growth in passenger numbers has led to an increase in the amount of vessels operating in environmentally sensitive and remote locations, creating new design, safety and operational challenges. Recent events – such as the Costa Concordia incident and engine room fires onboard various ships– highlight the need to review the impact of proposed legislation and the importance of continual regulatory development.

The need to balance economic and environmental efficiency with increased passenger expectations, as well as improved passenger and crew safety, brings other challenges for those involved in the design, construction and operation of passenger vessels.

RINA invites papers from naval architects, class societies, operators, researchers and builders on all related topics, including: design; leisure facilities and hotel features; operation; current and future regulations; environmental impact and technology innovations; powering and propulsion; sea keeping and emergency response.

Design and Operation of Passenger Ships runs in London on 20–21 November 2013.
