Port of Tyne in the UK welcomed it largest-ever cruise ship on 6 August when Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam arrived into the port, brining around 2,666 passengers.
The 99,902gt Nieuw Statendam is the second of Holland America’s Pinnacle Class ships to visit the port – sister ship Koningsdam visited in 2016.
While in port, the ship’s guests were able to take trips to nearby attractions, including Alnwick Gardens, Bamburgh Castle, Durham Cathedral and Hadrian’s Wall (also known as the Roman Wall).
Meanwhile, more than 100 travel agents, tour operators and others from North East England and Scotland were invited to board Nieuw Statendam and sample the onboard product offering.
“We are delighted to welcome Nieuw Statendam to the Port of Tyne, our largest cruise ship to date,” said Simon Brett, commercial director for port services at Port of Tyne. “Our cruise and ferry business adds over £56 million (US$68 million) to the regional economy, and we hope to grow the number of cruise calls visiting our shores each year. North East England has much to offer; from heritage and culture to arts and entertainment, we have it all within easy reach of the port.”
