Port of Tarragona in Spain has launched the first tenders for the implementation of an onshore power supply (OPS) system at Balears Wharf.

The initial phase covers two transformer substations with a combined investment of €900,657 excluding VAT. The project includes a 1,000 kilovolt-ampere main transformation centre in the port’s Logistics Activities Zone, which will centralise power supply, and a distribution and protection centre located at Balears Wharf.

Infrastructure works will also include the installation of 3.1 kilometres of underground medium-voltage line at 25 kilovolts connecting the external electrical substation to the new transformation centre, along with a further 3.4 kilometres of internal medium-voltage lines within the port area. An additional 840-metre subsea cable will cross the port entrance channel to complete the connection to the berth.

The OPS system will provide an initial available capacity of 10 megawatts, enabling cruise ships to connect to shore power while in port.

The project forms part of the port’s broader decarbonisation strategy and aims to reduce atmospheric emissions including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and particulate matter. It is also expected to improve both environmental and acoustic conditions in the port area, supporting wider European energy transition objectives for maritime transport.
