Plans for Martinique

The Regional Council of Martinique, a political assembly in charge of economic affairs, has passed an important three-year tourism development plan.

The plan, which features 16 major projects and 75 actions, aims to enhance the image of Martinique as a destination; increase the number of tourists; fill the low season with the creation of new events and attractions; and significantly increase revenue from tourism. More than 600 private projects have been examined so far.

As part of this ambitious development plan drawn up by the municipality, the downtown area of Martinique’s capital city Fort-de-France has recently undergone major renovation works. Commonly known as ‘Malecon’, Fort-de-France’s waterfront promenade has been a popular venue with locals since its completion in August 2008.

The 12-acre Savane Park, which is next to the waterfront, has recently been given a facelift to help significantly enhance visitors’ experience of the area. And in a development that is hoped will help increase the number of cruise tourists visiting the area, the Prefect of Martinique has decided to support cruise tourism development by simplifying entry regulations for all passengers who now only need an American visa to enter the municipality, meaning they can avoid the process of having to apply for a regular Schengen visa.
