Oceanwide Expeditions has ordered an ice-strengthened expedition vessel, which will debut in 2021 and be designed as a sister ship to the recently launched Hondius.
To be named Janssonius in honour of Dutch cartographer and publisher Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664), the newbuild will have the same passenger capacity (174 guests), a nearly identical size and design as Hondius. The ship will also be built by the same shipyard – Brodosplit in Croatia – to the same Polar Class 6 standards so she can operate in the Arctic, Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic.
Like Hondius, Janssonius will be powered by two main engines and will have a propulsion system with an adjustable pitch propeller, flexible power management and a shaft generator as opposed to a diesel-driven generator. This will minimise fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
Other environmental features will include interior and exterior LED lighting, biodegradable paints and lubricants, steam heating that uses minimal electricity and a system that uses waste heat to produce fresh water.
Onboard highlights will include two triple porthole cabins, four quadruple porthole cabins, 14 twin window cabins, 19 twin deluxe cabins and 31 twin porthole cabins. In addition, there will be six suites and eight superior cabins with balconies. One deck will be a dedicated observation lounge complete with a separate lecture room hosting interactive, multilingual lectures and presentations. There will also be a protected indoor Zodiac loading area that can also be used for activities such as kayaking, as well as two separate gangways to expedite ship-to-shore operations.
