Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has chosen musician Luis Fonsi to be the godfather of its newest ship, Norwegian Viva.
The Latin Grammy-winning singer will officially name Norwegian Viva at a christening ceremony in Miami on 28 November 2023. Fonsi will be joined by fellow musicians Paulina Rubio and Pedro Capó, as well as Saturday Night Live cast member Marcello Hernadez. All four entertainers will deliver performances throughout the night.
"We are thrilled to welcome Latin music icon Luis Fonsi to the NCL family as godfather of Norwegian Viva," said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. "Miami, our hometown, is immersed in Latin culture, and we want to celebrate Norwegian Viva’s debut with an infusion of Latin talent headlined by Luis. As a native Puerto Rican who is also based in Miami, he brings people together from around the world with his energy, positivity and music, making him the perfect complement to the vibrant energy of Norwegian Viva. We cannot wait for him to join us as we celebrate this milestone moment later this year.”
After completing the ceremony and its maiden voyage, Norwegian Viva will homeport in San Juan, Puerto Rico from 15 December 2023. The ship will offer seven-day Caribbean itineraries until April 2024, with calls to the British Virgin Islands, Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and the US Virgin Islands. It will then sail to Europe for a summer season of cruises from Piraeus, Greece; Lisbon, Portugal; and Civitavecchia and Trieste in Italy.
