Satellite connectivity firm MTN has partnered with Amazon to deploy Amazon Leo internet across key maritime industries, including the cruise and ferry sector, among others.
Amazon Leo (formerly known as Project Kuiper) is powered by thousands of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites with the aim of providing lower latency and higher transmission capacity than traditional geostationary satellite solutions. This will enable cruise and ferry operators to provide customers with fast onboard Wi-Fi, enhance crew communications and operate vessels more efficiently across the globe.
“Being selected as an authorised reseller of the Amazon Leo network allows us to stay at the forefront of satellite innovation as we expand our multi-network architecture,” said Steve Ritacco, senior vice president of technology and product development at MTN. “Integrating this new constellation will give us unparalleled flexibility to custom-design network solutions that offer continuous, high-performance service, including in the most challenging environments for maritime customers.”
Trevor Vieweg, head of global business at Amazon Leo, said the agreement would “benefit maritime operations worldwide”. He said: “Using our low-latency satellite network, maritime customers will gain real-time communication capabilities that enable everything from enhanced crew welfare to advanced vessel tracking, remote diagnostics, and seamless integration with shore-based operations.”
