Mavrik Marine has been selected to build eight high-speed passenger ferries for the Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transportation District. The vessels will provide transportation for up to two million passengers annually in San Francisco Bay, California, USA, replacing the district’s entire fleet of Lima-class ferries over the next several years.

The ferries have been designed and developed by Aurora Marine Design in San Diego, California, with structural design from One2Three Naval Architects in Australia. The 50-metre aluminium ferries will carry 500 passengers and accommodate 75 bicycles, and will include an elevator, snack bar, and indoor and outdoor seating.

With six MAN D2862 1066kW Tier 4 engines, the vessels will cruise at speeds of 39 knots and will be fitted with custom Marine Exhaust Systems DPF/SCR exhaust filter modules to ensure they are California Air Resource Board Tier 4 regulation compliant. The ferries will feature DanFoss gear-driven generators, connected to Reintjes/Karl Senner hybrid gear boxes and the propulsion systems will feature carbon shafts from Driveline Services of Portland. Electrical storage will be supplied by Echandia and McKay will provide electrical outfitting, alarm and monitoring package.

“Mavrik recently delivered four high-speed ferries to the Bay area, and we are very proud that our past performance and unwavering quality commitment allows us to partner with the District in the replacement of their eight-ferry fleet,” said Bailey Shewchuk, president of Mavrik Marine. “The District specified several key components they wanted integrated into the vessel, all designed to maximise efficiency and improve maintainability. Our recent vessel deliveries were key in demonstrating our capabilities and every vessel we’ve built has been a great sales reference for us. The quality of a Mavrik vessel is unmatched and our entire organisation is excited to showcase our experience on the Golden Gate project.”

Construction of the vessels will begin immediately at Mavrik’s facility in La Conner in Western Australia.
