Luftner begins carbon offsetting

Working together with climate protection organisation Atmosfair, Lüftner Cruises has become Europe’s first river cruise operator to offer guests on its Amadeus ships the option of offsetting their carbon dioxide emissions consumption. The company supports the project with an additional donation of 25 per cent of all contributions.

At the end of their cruise, passengers can decide whether to pay the suggested climate protection levy of €2 per day per cabin with donations supporting UN-certified projects in developing countries.

Dr Wolfgang Lüftner, founder and owner of Lüftner Cruises, explained: “We are well aware that tourism always impacts on the environment despite increasing efforts to offer environmentally friendly travel arrangements. For years we have endeavoured to initiate significant trends in this field and to encourage our passengers to take an active interest in the environment. So we are pleased that we can now offer them an opportunity to make a voluntary contribution to climate protection aboard our Amadeus ships.”

The Amadeus fleet has already gained certification with Green Globe (a subsidiary of the UN World Tourism Organisation) on the basis of environmentally friendly features on the vessels.
