The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will focus on “getting things done” in 2026, according to secretary general Arsenio Dominguez.
In his New Year message, Dominguez said 2026 would be a “year of implementation; moving from plans to concrete actions and measurable progress, reflected in our world maritime theme: ‘from policy to practice – powering maritime excellence’.”
Dominguez continued: “Seafarers. Nearly two million work at sea. Recognising that training needs to keep up with the new realities of the industry, we will start a major update of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention) – including emerging technologies, new fuels and changing requirements.”
The IMO will continue efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, as well as supporting the finalisation of the autonomous ships code for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), which aims to provide mandatory safety and operational standards by 2032.
“The IMO will continue supporting the implementation of the High Seas Treaty as it enters into force this month, underlying our global commitment to protect the ocean and biodiversity,” he said.
