Hurtigruten has returned Vesterålen to service on its Original Coastal Express route following an extensive renovation that introduces a new onboard concept inspired by the company's 133-year history on the Norwegian coast.

The renovation has refreshed 100 cabins and public areas, with new Arctic Superior and Mini Suite categories introduced.

“With Vesterålen back in service, it is not just a ship being put back into operation. It is living history with strong traditions being given a new life,” said Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten. “Vesterålen offers a completely unique travel experience, both for those living on the Norwegian coast and tourists.”

Vesterålen's new concept is intended to bring the company's coastal heritage into the guest experience throughout the ship. Restaurant menus draw on those dating back to the 1930s, while crew uniforms and specially designed tableware reference classic designs from the company's past. Historic details, coastal artwork and design references to past ships and crew are featured throughout.

“The changes have been very well received by guests who have been on board for the first sailings,” said André Pettersen, chief product and hotel operations officer at Hurtigruten. “Many highlight the special atmosphere on board and the combination of historical details and modern comfort. This confirms that we have succeeded in preserving Vesterålen’s unique character while elevating the experience to today’s standard.”
