Global Ports Holding (GPH) has outlined plans for the construction of a new cruise terminal, as well as the redevelopment of Pier 1 at San Juan Cruise Port in Puerto Rico, representing an investment of more than $300 million.

The operator, which took over operations at the port in February 2024, is working with government partners on an infrastructure modernisation programme, which includes berthing infrastructure improvements, terminal upgrades and operational enhancements.

Plans include building a new $200 million cruise terminal at Piers 11 and 12 – financed through private capital – to expand San Juan’s homeport infrastructure and improve embarkation and disembarkation capabilities. The modernisation programme also includes the demolition and reconstruction of Pier 1 in Old San Juan, with an estimated project cost of $114 million. This will be funded primarily through federal resources and developed in coordination with the relevant Puerto Rico government agencies.

GPH has already carried out a number of projects at the port, including building and installing a new passenger boarding bridge. The new bridge is in addition to another installed in 2025, both of which have been designed to improve safety, efficiency and operational flexibility at the port.

“San Juan Cruise Port is a key part of our growth strategy across the Americas,” said Mike Maura, regional director for the Americas at GPH. “It is a strong example of what can be achieved through long-term public-private partnerships and a shared commitment to developing world-class cruise infrastructure. Our focus extends beyond modernising port facilities. We are collaborating with our partners to strengthen Puerto Rico’s competitiveness as a cruise destination and homeport, improve operational efficiency and create the foundation for sustainable growth that benefits the cruise industry and the wider community.”
