The city of Genoa has announced plans to sell its 5 per cent stake in cruise and ferry facility operator, Stazioni Marittime.

The move, which comes after Genoa sold a 24 per cent stake earlier in the year – allowing MSC boss Gianluigi Aponte to gain a controlling stake - is expected to bring the city an estimated €1 million.

The company, which has done much to rebuild Genoa’s tourism industry post-financial crisis, recently opened the Ponte dei Mille berth extension, a development that is being completed along with work to the Ponte Parodi pier, which is due to open next year.

Once work on both is complete, officials estimate the port will be able to handle over one million passengers a year.
