FRS Finland has secured a new 15-year contract to operate an emission-free electric ferry on the Kalkkiranta-Bodö-Pörtö route between Finland and Norway from 1 September 2027.
The ferry is being constructed by Callboats in Vasa, Finland, and will have capacity for up to 58 passengers during Finland’s ice-free season. It will also be equipped with autonomous technology to assist the crew with navigation monitoring, manoeuvring and docking.
The vessel will be the first of its kind to enter regular scheduled service in Finland.
“We are very pleased that the Finnish government has created the framework conditions for emission-free transport and that we have found an innovative European technology partner in Callboats,” said Tim Kunstmann, managing director of FRS Europe division.
The contract will cover year-round operation of the route from Pörtö, which is located approximately 10 kilometres from the Finnish mainland.
