Fleet renewal programmes continue to gather momentum across the global ferry industry, with projects that have spent years on the drawing board or under construction now reaching significant milestones. From battery-electric high-speed craft in Australia to new ro-pax ferries entering service across Europe and publicly funded replacement programmes in Scotland and Canada, operators are steadily transforming their fleets to meet changing environmental, operational and passenger expectations.
One of the most significant developments has taken place in Tasmania, where Incat completed the shed rollback of Hull 102, the first of three 129-metre battery-electric high-speed ferries under construction for Danish operator Molslinjen. The successful rollback marks an important construction milestone, allowing installation of the passenger deck superstructures and signalling the transition to the next phase of the build programme. Once delivered, the three ferries will form the world’s largest electrification project at sea, operating on Denmark’s busy Kattegat routes.
“This is an important milestone, not just for this vessel, but for the entire programme,” said Incat chairman Robert Clifford. “These ships are at the forefront of the global transition to sustainable high-speed ferry transport, and every step forward reinforces Tasmania’s place at the centre of that transformation.”
Meanwhile, another major Incat milestone was reached when Hull 096, China Zorrilla, departed Hobart on 5 August aboard the semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel Black Marlin. Now bound for South America, the world’s largest battery-electric ferry is destined to enter service for Buquebús on the River Plate between Argentina and Uruguay.
Elsewhere, in Europe ferry operators are beginning to reap the benefits of major fleet renewal programmes. Corsica Linea’s new LNG-powered ro-pax Capu Rossu has entered commercial service, becoming the latest E-Flexer to join the Mediterranean fleet. Built by Stena RoRo and operating under long-term charter, the vessel combines increased freight capacity with lower emissions and improved passenger comfort on services linking Corsica with mainland France.
In the Baltic, Finnlines’ next phase of fleet renewal has moved with work commencing on the first of three Hansa Superstar-class ro-pax vessels at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai. Specifically designed for the Finland-Germany route, the methanol-capable vessels will be 243 metres long, accommodate up to 1,000 passengers and provide 5,100 lane metres of freight capacity. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in spring 2028 ahead of entry into service during the summer, with the remaining two vessels due to follow between late 2028 and the first half of 2029. Together, the €500 million ($580 million) programme will further strengthen Finnlines’ freight and passenger services while introducing a new generation of lower-emission ro-pax vessels to the Baltic.

TT-Line has reinforced its long-term fleet renewal strategy by confirming an order for a second Green Ship 2.0 battery-hybrid LNG ferry at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing. Joining the sister ship announced at the end of 2025, the vessels are scheduled to enter service from 2030 and will build on the success of Nils Holgersson and Peter Pan, which entered service in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Each new ferry will accommodate up to 930 passengers and provide 5,400 lane metres of freight capacity, reflecting the operator’s continued investment in high-capacity, lower-emission ro-pax tonnage.
The vessels will combine LNG propulsion with a battery energy storage system of between 5.5 and 10MWh, supported by enhanced shore power capability and a future-ready electrical architecture designed to facilitate greater electrification throughout their operational lives. According to TT-Line, the battery system will enable silent, emission-free operation during port stays and manoeuvring, while improving energy efficiency and operational flexibility. Together, the sister ships represent a further step in the evolution of future-proof ferry design, combining LNG technology with a clear pathway towards fully electric operation as infrastructure and battery technology continue to develop.
Estonian State Fleet has taken a significant step by signing a contract with Polish shipbuilder CRIST S.A. for the country’s first fully electric passenger ferry. Designed by LMG Marin, the 100-metre vessel will operate year-round on the Virtsu-Kuivastu route, including in winter ice conditions. Propulsion will be centred on a 3MWh battery system charged from shore, with biodiesel generators providing redundancy when required. The project represents a milestone for Estonia’s public ferry network and demonstrates the growing confidence of governments in battery-electric technology for essential transport links.
In Scotland fleet renewal continues with CMAL advancing several major programmes designed to improve the resilience of lifeline ferry services. Following delivery of Isle of Islay from Cemre Shipyard in Turkey, CMAL took ownership of the remaining three vessels under construction – Loch Indaal, Claymore and Lochmor – in a move designed to safeguard the programme and maintain momentum towards delivery. At the same time, work has continued towards delivery of Glen Rosa at Ferguson Marine, while CMAL has launched procurement for a new ro-pax ferry to replace the 1989-built Lord of the Isles on the Mallaig-Lochboisdale route.
Attention has also turned to Scotland’s Northern Isles, where GSI has been selected to build two new Freight-Flex vessels for the Aberdeen-Kirkwall-Lerwick route. Scheduled for delivery in 2029 replacing Helliar and Hildasay, the 140-metre ships are designed to deliver significantly greater operational flexibility than the existing freight vessels. While primarily intended to increase freight capacity by around 40 per cent and improve crossing times, they will also be capable of carrying up to 200 passengers during periods of peak demand or when passenger ferries are unavailable. Incorporating shore power capability and future fuel flexibility, the innovative design represents a fresh approach to lifeline ferry services, enabling operators to respond more effectively to changing operational requirements while strengthening the long-term resilience of Scotland’s Northern Isles network.
Across the Atlantic, BC Ferries continues to advance one of North America’s most comprehensive fleet renewal programmes. Construction progresses on additional fully electric Island Class ferries, while planning continues for further battery-electric vessels that will strengthen resilience across the British Columbia network.
In the North Atlantic, Smyril Line has also outlined plans for continued fleet development as passenger and freight demand grows across its services linking the Faroe Islands, Iceland and mainland Europe. Although details remain under development, the company’s long-term strategy reflects the wider trend among northern European operators to invest in larger, cleaner and more efficient vessels capable of meeting future environmental requirements without compromising operational flexibility.
Together, these developments illustrate an industry entering a new phase. The emphasis is no longer simply on announcing ambitious projects but on bringing them into operation, expanding proven programmes and planning the next generation of fleet renewal. Whether through battery-electric propulsion, hybrid technology or more efficient conventional designs, ferry operators worldwide continue to demonstrate that investment in modern fleets remains central to the future of passenger and freight transport.
