Dr. Sylvia Earle, a world-renowned oceanographer, explorer, and conservationist, is to serve as the godmother of Explora Journeys’ first ship, Explora I.

Dr. Earle is a pioneer of deep-sea exploration and a campaigner for ocean conservation, founding the Mission Blue non-profit organisation to raise public awareness and support for the preservation of a network of protected marine environments called ‘Hope Spots’. She will name the ship at a ceremony in Civitavecchia, Italy, on 8 July, 2023.

"We are honoured to have Dr. Sylvia Earle as the godmother of our first luxury ship, Explora I," said Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys. "Her lifelong commitment to ocean conservation and exploration makes her an inspiration to us all."

"I am honoured to be chosen as the godmother for Explora I and look forward to a meaningful relationship between Mission Blue, Explora Journeys, and the MSC Foundation toward protecting and restoring the ocean globally," said Dr. Earle.

Explora I is the first of up to six ships planned to join Explora’s fleet. The ship will set sail on its 15-night maiden itinerary, ‘Into Epic Fjords and the Arctic Circle,’ on 17 July 2023, departing from Southampton, UK.
