Damen Shipyards Group has started work to build two new ro-pax ferries, which will be operated by Régie des Transport Maritimes on the 25-mile route between Saint Pierre et Miquelon and Fortune, Canada.

Initially contracted in 2015, Damen launched the project on 11 March at an event in Paris, France and is due to deliver the two Mixt Ferries at the end of 2017.

“Damen has been chosen for a number of reasons, including the technical capacity to meet the requirements of the Collectivité,” said a representative from the Collectivité de Saint Pierre et Miquelon in a written statement. “These consist of building capacity, compliance with the specifications, understanding of the project and the capability to execute the mission. Also important was Damen’s willingness and ability to provide answers and information during the tendering process, the company’s quality certification and, of course, tendering in line with the project financing capacities. Since the signing of the contract and the administrative orders, we have been delighted with the choice we have made because of the warm welcome we received and the quality of the follow-up of the project.”

“This design combines a passenger ferry and a fast supply boat,” said Reinier van Herel, Damen’s regional director in France. “The vessels have the renowned Damen Axe Bow. This first of the ‘5510 Series’ is actually based on more than 150 Axe Bow vessels – a proven design – but it has been lengthened and widened for cargo and cars. This pioneering design is a result of a very close cooperation between Damen’s ferry and high-speed craft departments, as well as with the client.”

To be built at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania, the 192-passenger fast ro-pax ferries will each measure 55 metres in length, 11 in width and have the capacity for three trucks or 18 cars, motorcycles and cargo. Their high-speed capabilities will enable them to make the crossing between Saint Pierre et Miquelon and Fortune in just over one hour.

Both French-flagged ferries will be constructed according to Marine Marchande regulations and customised to withstand severe weather conditions. They will also comply with International Maritime Organization, Environmental Protection Agency, MARPOL and Transport Canada regulations.
