Satisfaction levels for cruise passengers visiting Copenhagen in Denmark reached 86% in 2014, according to the Cruise Copenhagen Network.

The association’s Passenger Survey 2014, which was released at Cruise Shipping Miami in the US in March, comprised responses from 994 passengers – 63% turnaround and 37% transit.

According to the survey, 86% of these respondents were very satisfied with their visit to the Danish capital, while 78% found the visit better than expected.

Passengers were impressed by the friendly welcome they received from the local citizens, as well as the variety of cultural attractions and other tourist sites in the Copenhagen. Overall, 77% were very satisfied with the variety of activities on offer, 72% with the friendliness of the locals, and 68% with the welcome services at the port. Meanwhile, three out of four respondents would recommend a cruise to Copenhagen or a visit to the city to others.

The study also showed that 66% of the passengers participated in a shore excursion purchased by the cruise line, 67% stating that the tour provided great value for money. Tivoli Gardens, the Canal Tours, Amalienborg Palace and Museum, Christianborg Palace and Rosenborg Castle were the city’s top five most visited attractions.

Cruise Copenhagen Network’s report also showed that 53% of the transit passengers spent an average of between two and four hours onshore, while 37% spent four to eight hours in the city, spending an average of 549 DKK per passenger. Around 94% of turnaround passengers stayed in hotels, including 54% who stayed in Copenhagen pre-cruise and 87% who remained in the city after their cruise. The average expenditure for turnaround passengers was around 2,994 DKK per passenger.

Over the past decade, cruise traffic and passenger numbers have both increased at Copenhagen. The number of turnarounds in the city has risen from 60 in 2000, to 129 in 2014, while calls have grown from 193 in 2000, to 313 in 2014. Passenger numbers have also increase from 166,000 in 2000, to 740,000 in 2014. Next year, Copenhagen expects to handle 760,000 cruise passengers, which will be higher than the figures for 2014 and 2015, while turnarounds will also rise to 136.
