Costa Cruises recorded a 9% decrease in fuel consumption per passenger per day and a 3% reduction in carbon footprint in 2014, compared to 2013.

The Sustainability Report – Results for 2014 and Outlook for the Future report showed that Costa’s year-on-year emission reductions were equal to -4% tonnes of sulphur oxide, -7% tonnes of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter, all of which are produced during the fuel combustion processes. The line also recorded a 9.7% reduction in energy consumption.

In 2014, Costa installed exhaust gas cleaning systems seven of its ships and replaced 450,000 light bulbs with low-power consumption LED bulbs across the fleet, resulting in 80% energy savings.

Plus, 100% of the materials and products consumed onboard were collected and separated for disposal and recycling, while there was a 1.36% reduction in water consumption across the fleet.

This July, Costa also revealed plans to further improve the sustainability of its fleet by ordering two of the world’s first LNG-fuelled cruise ships from the Meyer Turku yard in Finland. The vessels are due to enter service in 2019 and 2020.
