Marine energy solution provider Corvus Energy has received an order from Remontowa Shipbuilding in Poland for the supply of battery systems to seven fully electric ferries under construction for Scottish Government-owned Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL).

Measured by value in US dollars, the contract is the largest in Corvus Energy’s history. The vessels form part of CMAL’s Small Vessel Replacement Programme, which is intended to renew the fleet serving Scotland’s island communities and support lower-emission ferry operations.

“It’s truly remarkable to witness seven identical ferries being constructed at the same shipyard,” said Stein Ruben Larsen, senior vice president of sales at Corvus Energy. “This project is significant for Corvus Energy not only because of its scale, but also because of the outstanding collaboration we’ve had with the designer, the shipyard, and the integrator throughout the entire process.”

Each of the seven Loch-class car and passenger ferries will be equipped with Corvus Dolphin NxtGen energy storage systems with a capacity of 5.7 megawatt-hours per vessel, resulting in a combined installed capacity of approximately 40 megawatt-hours. Delivery of the first system is scheduled for 2026, followed by three systems in 2027 and a further three in 2028.

The vessels are being developed through an international design and construction programme. naValue in Germany provided the concept design, LMG Marin in Norway developed the basic design, and Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting in Poland carried out the electrical and detailed design. System integration will be undertaken by ABB.

Once in service, the ferries will operate along Scotland’s west coast, providing transport links for local communities using fully electric propulsion.

The order builds on an established working relationship between Remontowa Shipbuilding and Corvus Energy, which began in 2018. Since then, Corvus has supplied battery systems, via integrators, for a range of Remontowa newbuilds, including fully electric ferries and hybrid offshore vessels. With the addition of the seven CMAL ferries, the total number of joint projects between the two companies is approaching 20.

“Remontowa Shipbuilding is pleased to continue our cooperation with Corvus Energy on these vessels,” said Michal Jaguszewski, commercial director at Remontowa Shipbuilding. “Our collaboration has proven reliable through multiple projects, and Corvus’ light weight ESS technology plays an important role in achieving the high environmental standards required for CMAL’s new ferries.”

“It is truly rewarding to see our long-standing partnership with Remontowa continue into such a significant project,” said Fredrik Witte, CEO of Corvus Energy. “Since 2018, we have collaborated on a wide range of vessels, building a foundation of mutual trust that we deeply value. This contract also marks the conclusion of a fantastic year for Corvus Energy, with record-high order intake and revenue. As we look ahead to a market in strong growth, we are excited to support the yard in delivering these state-of-the-art electric ferries and grateful that so many customers continue to choose Corvus solutions.”
