The Government of Canada is going to invest up to $14.3million ($US10.44million) in shore power infrastructure at Port Charlottetown in Canada to support green shipping corridor initiatives across the Canada New England region.

Project aims include reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions while cruise ships are berthed at the port.

The investment, which will be made under the funding stream for the green shipping corridors programme, will support Charlottetown Harbour Authority. This builds on prior investments by ports such as Halifax and Montréal in Canada and New York, USA.

“As one of the leading cruise operators calling at Port Charlottetown, Holland America Line also welcomed the investment, highlighting the role of shore power in advancing more sustainable cruise operations across the region,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line.

“Cutting emissions takes real infrastructure – and shore power is a big part of that.Port Charlottetown is a favourite stop for our guests, and investments like this help secure its future for years to come. It’s been a true team effort across government, our port partners and maritime to drive this kind of meaningful progress for both our industry and for the local community.”

It is hoped the investment will strengthen the relationship between Port Charlottetown and Prince Edward Island with more sustainable operations.

“Shore power is a critical investment in the future of our port, supporting the decarbonisation of cruise operations while advancing Prince Edward Island’s broader environmental and green energy initiatives,” said Mike Cochrane, CEO of Port Charlottetown.
