Brodosplit shipyard has floated out polar expedition cruise vessel Ultramarine in a ceremony in Split, Croatia. The ship is currently under construction for Quark Expeditions and will be the first newbuild that the shipyard has delivered for an American buyer.

Representatives of state and local authorities, partners in construction and financing and several special guests were present at the event. Andrea Mutak, a representative of the Anđeli Association for the care of children with severe physical and developmental disabilities from Split, smashed the traditional bottle of champagne against the hull to launch the ship into the sea.

“I want to point out that this is our second of three ships that we have contracted in a completely new and innovative way that includes financing the ship,” said Tomislav Debeljak, chairman of the board for Brodosplit. “In this way, we showed the very demanding world market the possibilities of Croatian shipbuilding and the possibilities of Brodosplit, which is growing into a leader in European builders of polar cruisers. I am glad that today we can show how very difficult and complex projects can be realised in difficult times for the economy.”

Ultramarine is 110 metres long and will be able to accommodate up to 200 passengers in 103 cabins, including six solo suites and large twin suites. Public spaces will include two restaurants, a wine-tasting bar, a lecture theatre, and a Wellness Centre. Two helidecks for twin-engine helicopters and an internal hanger for Zodiacs, sea kayaks and other water-based transport will enable guests to enjoy a range of excursions at various destinations.
