Spirits company Bacardi is to expand its partnership with circular technology provider ecoSPIRITS to reduce single-use glass bottles and packaging waste in the cruise sector and other industries.
The two companies began collaborating in August 2023, when they worked with Carnival Cruise Line to develop ecoTOTE 3.0SC Cruise Edition, the first circular packaging solution designed specifically for maritime environments. The packaging, which offers enhanced corrosion resistance and complies with United States Public Health hygiene regulations, was piloted with Bacardi Carta Blanca rum. Bacardi has since used ecoTOTE 3.0SC Cruise Edition to eliminate more than 130,000 single-use glass bottles and 82,000 kilograms of packaging waste.
The new global agreement gives Bacardi access to the full ecoSPIRITS circular technology platform, including ecoTOTE, ecoPLANT, SmartPour and CircularONE. This will enable the company to develop future applications for circular packaging across additional brands, channels and sectors.
“Our collaboration with Bacardi began with a bold idea: bringing circular packaging to the cruise industry for the first time,” says Paul Gabie, CEO, ecoSPIRITS. “This new global agreement marks an important next step in our collaboration and creates a framework to explore broader future opportunities together across additional channels and sectors. The technical collaboration we’ve built with Bacardi also shows how brand owners and technology partners can work together to accelerate the transition away from single-use glass.”
