Shipbuilder Aros Marine has completed a refurbishment of several areas onboard Spitsbergen, an expedition cruise ship operated by HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions).
The project, which was completed in June 2025, focused on the Explorer Bar, Science Centre, crew messroom and day room extension. “The areas were worn out and also required layout improvements to create a more convenient flow and enhance the guest experience,” said Romanas Vasiuninas of Aros Marine.
Prior to the refurbishment, the Aros Marine team visited the ship to review all areas. “We then discussed with the client how to refresh the public spaces, improve the flow in the crew mess and enhance the atmosphere in the day room so the personnel can relax and unwind after working hours,” said Vasiuninas. “We also installed an interpreter booth in the Explorer Bar, making it more convenient to give briefings for the expedition team in different languages. The Science Center now looks brighter and conveys a sense of playfulness.”
The Explorer Bar also includes new furniture, while the Science Centre has new flooring, custom furniture, glass display units and new curtains. For the crew messroom and day room, Aros Marine’s work included new floor and wall coverings, and new furniture. Promart provided galley equipment.

“It was decided to reupholster the existing armchairs in the Science Center instead of replacing them, which allowed us to reduce costs while minimising our environmental impact,” said Vasiuninas.
“We had very limited time to prepare for this project; therefore, the range of products and materials was more limited than usual. The result depended greatly on the cooperation of both parties, and we would like to highlight that the client was very supportive, and the crew onboard provided our team with everything necessary.”
