Antarctica21’s new purpose-built expedition cruise ship has floated out at the ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia, Chile. Magellan Discoverer has been built to PC6 ice class standard like sister ship Magellan Explorer and accommodates up to 76 guests.
“This is a deeply symbolic moment for us,” said Jaime Vásquez, president of Antarctica21. “With the launch of Magellan Discoverer, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable Antarctic tourism and to innovation from southern Chile. This ship not only represents a technological leap in sustainability but also reflects national talent and what we are capable of achieving when we strive for excellence. We are proud to collaborate with ASENAV on this project, which brings together cutting-edge engineering and a responsible vision for travel in the planet’s most remote region.”
Magellan Discoverer is the first hybrid diesel-electric polar vessel to be built in the Americas. It features a “next-generation” hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system with ABB’s Azipod maneuvering technology, as well as an advanced energy storage system powered by marine-grade lithium batteries. These technologies aim to reduce underwater noise, allowing for more wildlife observation opportunities.
“After many months of hard work, we celebrate the launch of Magellan Discoverer, an achievement that reflects the talent and collaboration of two companies from Chile,” said Fernando Rodríguez, general manager of ASENAV. “This vessel marks a significant leap in sustainable engineering, positioning ASENAV as a benchmark shipyard in the local maritime industry and placing Chile at the forefront of global innovation and design. In just a few months, Antarctica21 will usher in a new era of polar exploration aboard a cruise ship unlike any other in the Americas.”
Magellan Discoverer will now enter the final phase of construction, with interior outfitting crafted by Tomas Tillberg Design, integration of navigation systems, technical trials and maritime certifications all due to take place in the coming months ahead of the ship’s delivery in September 2026.
