ABB is to install a new power and propulsion system on San Cristoforo, a ferry that sails on Italy’s Lake Maggiore, enabling her to operate in both hybrid and zero-emission mode.
Owned and operated by Gestione Navigazione Laghi, the ferry was built in 1965 and carries up to 450 passengers and 27 vehicles. The vessel is currently powered by a pair of conventional 310-kilowatt diesel main engines driving twin shaft lines propellers.
ABB will replace this system with new propulsion motors, diesel-generator sets, transformers and switchboards. The company will also install an Onboard Microgrid, a compact direct current grid platform recently launched to help smaller vessels optimise fuel efficiency by making the best use of available power.
“The San Cristoforo conversion is a milestone project for ABB as it underpins our capability to modernise ships of any age, size and type so that they can take advantage of the efficiency benefits of hybrid operation,” said Jyri Jusslin, head of Global Service at ABB Marine & Ports.
Following the conversion, the controllable pitch propellers will be replaced with simpler, more efficient fixed pitch propellers to further improve the ferry’s overall fuel economy.
Passengers will benefit from a quieter, smoother ride along the lake with less onboard vibration, noise and exhaust fumes.
“This modernisation will allow San Cristoforo to operate in the most environmentally responsible way, and we are delighted to work with ABB on this project, given the group’s extensive experience in developing, project managing and supporting shipboard hybrid systems,” said Alessandro Acquafredda, general director of Gestione Navigazione Laghi.
