Marine solutions and services provider Wärtsilä is to supply an integrated solution for Canadian operator Société des traversiers du Québec’s (STQ) two new, dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) ropax passenger ferries.

Each of the double-ended vessels, currently under construction at Canadian shipyard Chantier Davie Canada (Davie), will be fitted with Wärtsilä’s 20DF engines, electrical power and automation systems and its Control and Communication Centre solution, which integrates bridge, navigation and communication control. The company will also provide its LNGPac fuel storage and treatment system, enabling the ferries to operate on both LNG and traditional marine fuels.

“Wärtsilä’s extensive know-how and experience in developing dual-fuel technologies, together with our systems integration capabilities, brings significant added value to customers seeking environmental compliance with operating cost reductions,” said Magnus Miemois, vice president of solutions at Wärtsilä Ship Power. “By being able to offer a total solutions offering and integration support to the shipyard, we can reduce scheduling risks, while increasing efficiencies and lowering costs.”

Wärtsilä will also provide the Davie yard with site management and commissioning services.

“Wärtsilä is a leader in LNG dual-fuel technology and we are very pleased to add the ferries to our working partnership with them, which presently extends across all construction programmes at Davie,” said Alan Bowen, CEO of Davie. “As leaders in their respective fields, together Davie and Wärtsilä are able to provide the highest quality of products to a broad range of industries from passenger transportation to offshore oil and gas.”

Capable of carrying 432 passengers and 115 car or 16 tractor units, the ships will operate between Tadoussac and Baie-Sainte-Catherine on the Saguenay River in Québec, Canada. The ferries are scheduled to start service in 2015.
