ADELTE Ports & Maritime is to supply two seaport passenger boarding bridges (SPBBs) for the new Cruise Center Steinwerder terminal in Hamburg, Germany.

The terminal is currently being developed by Cruise Gate Hamburg, a subsidiary of Hamburg Port Authority, in cooperation with Hamburg Airport. Built in Steinwerder, the terminal will be situated at the centre of the port and will be able to accommodate new generation cruise vessels from June 2015.

Unlike the existing terminals in Altona and HafenCity, the new terminal will have two separate buildings for arrivals and departures, which will be connected to ADELTE’s new SPBBs. This will guarantee flexible and fast embarking and disembarking operations for up to 8,000 cruise guests a day.

“We are excited about the new cruise terminal as it will provide first-class service infrastructure for the fast increasing number of cruise guests,” said Iris Scheel, project manager of Cruise Center Steinwerder. “We expect this number will double in the next 15 years. The project is going on schedule. ADELTE and all other project partners are doing a great job.”

Both custom-designed Hydra-model SPBBs will be equipped with a docking ramp to allow passenger to embark and disembark via cruise ships doors below quay level. This will ensure optimum operating efficiency and enhance the safety of passengers, including those with reduced mobility.

“It is the second time that our company is contracted to deliver sophisticated boarding bridges to the Port of Hamburg; the first SPBB was installed in 2011 at Cruise Center Altona and is perfectly operating since,” Martin Westphal, strategic sales and innovation director at ADELTE. “We are very proud to be involved in this spectacular new terminal concept and to be able to bring our unique design and safety technology to help grow the cruise activity in Hamburg.”
