Royal Caribbean International has broken maritime tradition by naming American actors Carlos and Alexa PenaVega and their 17-month-old son Ocean, as godfamily of new ship Symphony of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean chose the PenaVegas to be godfamily based on the fact that they have celebrated a number of milestones on the line’s Oasis Class ships. They got engaged on Oasis of the Seas and spent their ‘babymoon’ on Allure of the Seas. Carlos first cruised with Royal Caribbean 25 years ago at the age of four and Ocean sailed for the first time at 13 months old. The PenaVegas were asked to be godfamily while they were filming Hallmark Channel’s movie ‘Love at Sea’ onboard Symphony of the Seas’ sister ship Harmony of the Seas.

“Carlos and Alexa have been an extension of our family for quite some time, and they truly personify our spirit of innovation and adventure in every way,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International. “We’re very excited to welcome them and their son Ocean as the first-ever godfamily to officially name a ship. Their passion for cruising and commitment to family make them the perfect choice to serve as the guiding spirits for Symphony of the Seas.”

Symphony of the Seas will be the first-ever cruise ship to be christened by a godfamily, rather than a traditional godmother, who is usually a renowned female royal, athlete or celebrity. During the christening ceremony at PortMiami in Florida, US this November, the PenaVegas will help to bless the vessel and her future guests and crew, before breaking a bottle of champagne against her hull.

“Words can’t describe the overwhelming emotions we’re feeling,” said Carlos PenaVega, alongside Alexa and Ocean. “Royal Caribbean ships have been the backdrops to so many unforgettable moments in our life, and it means so much to us to be named godfamily of Symphony of the Seas. Royal Caribbean continues to make amazing memories with our family, and this next adventure will be our best yet.”
