Port Saint John in New Brunswick, Canada is to host 63 cruise ship calls and more than 143,000 guests in 2016, starting with Fred. Olsen Cruise Line’s Balmoral on 9 May.

Balmoral will dock at the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal with around 900 guests, marking the first time the line has called since 2009. Although many of Balmoral’s passengers and crew are currently suffering from gastrointestinal illness, Port Saint John has been advised that the Public Health Agency of Canada is working with Fred. Olsen to investigate the nature of the illness and ensure that outbreak prevention procedures have been followed.

“While it is unfortunate that the passengers and crew are experiencing this illness, health officials are monitoring the situation aboard Balmoral and will ensure appropriate protocols are in place to mitigate risk onboard the vessel and onshore,” said Andrew Dixon, senior vice president of Trade and Business Development for Port Saint John.

This year, the port will host six inaugural visits, five double-ship days, four triple-ship days and one quadruple-ship day. In addition, Disney Cruise Line will return to Port Saint John, while Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas will call four times between August 30 and 13 October. She is the largest cruise ship to call at Port Saint John to date.

“We at Port Saint John are excited about the start of the 2016 cruise season on Monday,” said Dixon. “The entire team at the port, from our operations group to our Meet & Greet volunteers and business development and marketing staff, have been working in concert to ensure the guest and ship experience at Port Saint John exceeds expectations. We know that our industry and community partners are also gearing up to welcome the tens of thousands of guests and crew we are expecting this year.”
