Denmark’s Port of Skagen is to develop stationary Port Reception Facilities to enable visiting cruise ships to dispose of blackwater and greywater safely when in port.

To be operational from June 2016, the facility will have six shore connections at Cruise Quay 9 and two at Pier 10 with direct discharge to the municipal sewage system via a 600cbm tank. The capacity for wastewater will be 300cbm per hour. This will enable the port to comply with new Marpol annex IV regulations for disposing waste in the Baltic Sea, which will be implemented from 2019 and 2021.

“We are looking forward to improve our services as we believe that these new services will be of great importance to the cruise lines,” said Willy Hansen, the port’s CEO.

The port has also published results from a GP Wild and BREA survey, which asked 471 passengers to answer questions about their visit to Skagen in June and July 2015. Of these visitors, 70% were from the UK, 20% from the US and 10% from other countries, mainly Australia and Canada. On average, each person spent €62.35 while in Skagen.

Around 91% were very satisfied with their visit to Skagen, stating that the port and destination met or exceeded their expectations. Some of the highest scores were given to tour guides (91%), historic sites and museums (93%), courtesy of store employees (99%), friendliness of residents (99%), local transportation services (93%) and overall shopping experience (94%).

“We are very pleased with the results of the survey, and we continue to work on destination developments in order to increase the passenger satisfaction,” said Anne Sofie Rønne Jensen, cruise manager at the port of Skagen.
