Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam will feature a three-deck-high atrium, a musically designed stainless-steel sculpture, bespoke furnishings and lightings, as well as French and Pan-Asian restaurants when she debuts in December 2018.
The new 2,666-guest ship’s interior attempts to “balance contemporary styling and elegance” and will have spaces created by hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany and architect Bjørn Storbraaten.
Tihany, who designed the first Pinnacle Class ship Koningsdam, aims to create light-filled and naturally flowing public spaces that reflect Holland America’s tradition and design, while introducing new features.
Nieuw Statendam’s central atrium will have a sculpture that emulates the feeling of being inside and surrounded by a musical instrument. The experience changes as guests move around and through it, so no two perspectives are the same. The atrium is capped by a ceiling skylight that serves as a backdrop for subtly changing high-definition projected images.
“Nieuw Statendam will join our fleet in just over four months and guests are excitedly reserving their place to sail on this beautiful new ship in its premier season,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line. “Like her sister-ship Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam is all about fine details and thoughtful touches throughout the ship that create an ambiance of both elegance and style. From the public areas to the staterooms, Nieuw Statendam is going to be stunning and very popular with our guests.”
Storbraaten has designed the central pool, which will feature a two-level ‘magrodome’ area that is created in a glass-enclosed space. The lower level will have traditional poolside elements, while the mezzanine level has more seating, a large screen for poolside movies and New York-style deli and pizza eatery.
The dining room will span two floors and have custom-made furnishings and lighting, as well as curved pillars that emphasise the high ceiling. The centrepiece is a curved copper sheath surrounding a two-storey wine tower.
Holland America’s French restaurant, ‘Rudi’s Sel De Mer’, will be reimagined on Nieuw Statendam with expanded seating for 54 guests. The restaurant is richly decorated, and it retains its curved shape and polished walnut wood accordion-inspired column structure. The back wall is adorned with a collection of porcelain plates decorated with Chef Rudi Sodamin’s ‘Food Faces’ culinary pop art, produced by Bernardaud.
The line’s Pan-Asian restaurant, Tamarind, emphasises nature’s basic elements: water, wood, fire and earth. The Tamarind will have an outdoor dining area.
Nieuw Statendam will spend her first season in the Caribbean, sailing roundtrips from Fort Lauderdale, Florida between December 2018 and April 2019. All Caribbean cruises include a day at of the line’s private Bahamian island Half Moon Cay. In spring 2019, the ship will cross the Atlantic Ocean and spend the summer and autumn exploring northern Europe and the Mediterranean. Nieuw Statendam then returns to the Caribbean in October 2019.
