German singer and songwriter Lena Meyer-Landrut officially christened TUI Cruises’ new Mein Schiff 5 in Lübeck-Travemünde, Germany on 15 July.

Following a performance of her hit song 'Satellite,' Meyer-Landrut beamed a laser off the top of the Maritim Strandhotel at Travemünde, triggering a bottle of champagne to smash against Mein Schiff 5’s hull. Mein Schiff 5, which arrived in Travemünde at 9 pm after a short cruise from Kiel, Germany, remained offshore during the christening.

Around 1,800 passengers and 300 invited guests enjoyed the onboard ceremony, including Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises, and Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

They watched performances by the acrobats Lukas Irmler and 'Les Oiseaux du paradis' (The Birds of Paradise), and enjoyed a fireworks display, which was livestreamed to LED screens on Travemünde beach.

Mein Schiff 5 returned to Kiel on Saturday morning, where she picked up passengers and departed for her maiden voyage to Tallinn, Estonia; St Petersburg, Russia; Helsinki, Finland; and Stockholm, Sweden. The ship will return to Kiel on 24 July.

The vessel will operate itineraries in the Baltic, Norway and Western Europe throughout summer, before repositioning to the Caribbean.
